Turquoise Soap

Il_fullxfull22835652

You are looking at a dish of soaps. Although they look like turquoise stones, these are beautiful soaps that are scented with cinnamon and peony. I don't think I would be able to bring myself to actually use one of these, they are so exquisite.

The amethyst soap is equally impressive, yet completely different. Both soaps are made by Star Soaps in the heart of Tennessee. They are priced between $1.49 for 1oz soaps to $8.99 for a 6oz soap. Assorted sets are $12.99.

What a Wonderful World

Picture_19

It always amazes me how random act of kindness can change the world. Take this story about Julio Diaz, a 31 year old social worker in the Bronx who may have changed his mugger's life for the good.
Who knows, if more of us made a point of doing such acts of kindness more regularly, imagine what a wonderful world this would be. [NPR-Read the full story]

Kudo's to you, Julio.

Subway Animals Come to Life

Plastic_bag_animals
A really inventive example of street art using the most basic of materials - discarded plastic bags. The image shows a 'deflated' animal that comes to life as a subway rushes past underneath - the air from below inflates the animal. Very clever!

Jewelry from Human Hair

80311_1_eyelash_necklace_pearl

Believe it or not, those are real eyelashes (well, not really - but they are made with 'sterilized human hair'.) What would posses a designer to create jewelry with hair? Go ask designer Stephanie Simek who created this eyelash necklace (among other similar ones in her collection.) It's creepy, yet pretty at the same time. The pearls off to the side are like tears, which is sort of poetic, but anything to do with disembodied eyes unnerves me (take for instance, those goofy eyeball Halloween favors).

Hudson Yards Battle Won

Picture_12

Developer Tishman Speyer won rights to develop Manhattan’s Hudson Rail Yards with a scheme designed by architect Helmut Jahn and landscape architect Peter Walker. (Architectural Record - Read the rest of the article here)

My personal preference was for Extell Development, but then again I am biased as I used to worked for them.

Ford Capri Revival?

Picture_10

Rumor has it that Ford is bringing back the Capri, a British 70s classic. Apparently production will start in 2012. Whether it's true or not, and if it'll be exclusively for the UK market remains to be seen.

All I can say is - Oh goody gumdrops!
