ReubenMiller's Got a Brand-Spanking New Look!

I'm sure you've noticed by now that we've got a fresh new look for the blog. After a lot of coding, tweaking and generally making a mess of CSS, I've managed to get it to look half-decent (let me know what you think of it!) It still remains a work-in-progress. The goal of this redesign was to make it easier to get around and add some more color. After all, you know we're suckers for color!

Last but not least, our large header incorporates the work of a featured artist. We'll be featuring different artists in that space and rotating them over time to keep things interesting. This isn't a sponsored spot, but rather a testament to our support of great artists. Our first feature is of the brilliant and witty Simon Oxley, one of our all-time favorites.

Enjoy!

Juxtapoz

Picture_34

Hooray! For those of you who are fans of Juxtapoz Magazine, you'll be happy to know that they have just release their first illustrated collection.

For those unfamiliar with the magazine, heres the shpiel:
Juxtapoz Art and Culture magazine was established by California artist Robert Williams in 1994 to document an exploding art movement emanating largely from the West Coast of the United States. In the intervening years, this movement has gone global and Juxtapoz has rebranded and reimagined itself to better represent a generation of artists intent on working outside the ossified art establishment. In this first volume, Juxtapoz Illustration, artists such as MODE 2, KozynDan, Mike Giant, James Jean, Evan Hecox, Grotesk, Alex Pardee, Jeremy Fish and Morning Breath are briefly profiled and then allowed the space to let their work do the talking. While all of the artists featured in this volume have experienced professional success and artistic accolades, they remain accessible to the commercial client and art collector alike representing this phenomenal modern movement perfectly.

192 Pages, Hardcover, 8” x 10”,
150 Color Illustrations,
ISBN: 978-1-58423-289-6
Price: $29.95

Client Didn't Get It (But I Did)

Gdsgravity
Fwis is a design firm that does some really thought-proving work. This is a book cover design they did that was rejected. For me, it's a winner.  As a designer myself, I can appreciate the sometimes maddeningly conservative approach of clients to more risky (but attention-getting) concepts. I would do a double take if this was on display at my local B&N.

The pages on their site have unusual titles. This one was on the 'Client Didn't Get It' page, for instance. Here's a screen shot of the links on Fwis. I thought it was worth sharing!

Fwis - we think you guys are great. Keep creating crazy concepts, you know, the kinds that win design awards (but turn off small-minded clients.)

Milk Eggs Vodka

Milk_eggs

"If we are what we eat, then this book reveals deep truths about the average American (not to mention more mundane truths like a surprising number of people enjoy onions and, for most people, mayonnaise is very, very difficult to spell). Milk, Eggs, Vodka is a celebration of the humble grocery list. Almost anyone will find themselves engrossed in this voyeuristic look into every day life - less than healthy lists, lists for parties, lists with personal and often odd annotations on them...and the list of lists goes on. Besides over 150 found lists, the book also includes short essays on collecting, shopping, eating, and list making. Some of the lists will even include recipes that can be made from the ingredients on the list."

Ekaterina Erschowa has compiled a book of some of her illustrated Origami characters. Each folding figure was developed from a square sheet with the format 15x15 cm and folded without the use of scissors or glue. This book unites the traditional Japanese art of Origami with modern illustrative style elements.
